The Seychelles beach seine fishery targets mackerel that school in the shallow water close to shore. The beach seine is deployed using a traditional pirogue to form a large semicircle enclosure, which is then dragged towards shore. This method of fishing is highly effective but can often catch significant numbers of juvenile sharks and rays as bycatch. Here a couple of fishermen stand in the background as a spotted eagleray finds itself trapped in the net and dragged onto shore.
