An aerial photo of a large coral reef lagoon off the northern coastline of Vanua Levu, the second largest island in Fiji taken at low tide. The reef lies within the Great Sea Reef, the world’s third longest continuous barrier reef system or the third longest reef in the southern hemisphere. The complex dendritic lattice of the coral reef system divides the lagoon into an intricate pattern of turquoise pools, forming an abstract pattern reminiscent of the tree of life. That is more than just an appropriate analogy because coral reefs are complex integrated ecosystems, vital to the health of tropical seas and the livelihoods of local people.
