Tied up and helpless on a jetty in Badagry, these turtles await their inevitable fate—to be slaughtered for their meat and shell. All but one species of marine turtles are listed by the IUCN as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered (facing high to extremely high risk of extinction in the wild), and are protected worldwide. Yet, these ancient mariners continue to be threatened by human activities such as harvesting of eggs and adults, accidental capture in fishing gear, and habitat destruction. It is hoped that this image will increase awareness and catalyze further action, as the plight of turtles epitomizes the plight of our ocean today. While much laudable effort is being made to conserve the ocean and its biodiversity, ocean health continues to decline as a result of human impacts. More needs to be done at all levels- from international and regional to governments, local communities and individuals. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Is our will strong enough?
