I took this picture whilst holidaying on the island of Malta. My friends and I were staying in Marsaskala, which still retains its fishing fleet. One morning before dawn I went down to the beach in the hope of catching a photo of the sun rising above the sea and I came across this gentleman engaged in trying to make a catch of his own. Apart from the tranquillity and beauty of the scene it struck me how elemental it all was: the rising sun, the sea, a man fishing. It could have been taken at any time in history - only the big ships on the horizon give the game away. I have trimmed the photo to remove an intrusion at the bottom of the frame and slightly lightened the midtones; otherwise it is as it came off the camera.
