A juvenile green turtle found entangled in fishing net on Alphonse Island. The turtle was still alive and staff from Island Conservation Society were able to cut it free and release it relatively unharmed. This turtle was fortunate to survive; discarded fishing gear kills tens of thousands of marine animals every year. Modern fishing nets are made from synthetic materials which will take several hundred years to biodegrade. The lasting human impact of waste in the oceans will be felt for generations to come. It is important for people to see images like this one, so that they take action now against the human waste that is filling the oceans.
