Thanks to its magnificent natural harbours and its ongoing investment in well-sheltered yachting marinas, Malta is well known for attracting many sailing boat races.

This photo is of the start of one such race organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club to Syracuse.
It was taken at 09:58 on the 10th July 2010 from the Sliema Promenade and features all the sailing boats taking part in the race, just off the breakwater waiting for the starter's horn to start.

Besides being a sport that promotes teamwork between able-bodied persons, sailing also requires that the sailors that venture in these elegant boats are respectful of the ocean's might and delicate ecosystem. When out in the open sea, the symbiosis between the people and sea will enable both the boat and its crew to navigate with wind power only to cope with unpredictable competitive challenges through calm and stormy seas.
Sailing contributes to Malta's prosperity through the value-added tourism it generates.
