The mighty Navua River starts more than 1,000 metres above sea level, high up in the mountains of central Fiji, winds its way 90km through rugged country and narrow gorges down to the basin, which is home to the thriving market town of Navua by Pacific Harbour. At high tide, this part of the river is some 200 metres wide and is as still as a photograph. On this day, high tide coincided with the most incredible sunset that made it feel like the sky, and indeed the river, was on fire. I had been shooting all day with a digital SLR and the batteries were dying, so I had to switch to the point-and-shoot Canon Sureshot.
