While enjoying snorkelling on a remote island off the coast of Guadalcanal Solomon Islands, a young man approached me. Simon was selling sea shells by the sea shore in the Solomons.
We had a great conversation from which I learnt a lot about his island lifestyle. Although on the surface it appeared idyllic he worked hard for every dollar to survive. He was smart and was pursuing opportunities to do more for his country, for his island home and environment. Searching for and selling sea shells offered a critical income for him to achieve his goals. His beautiful dugout canoe, broad white smile and dreams captivated and inspired me. The shell I bought from Simon that days was so much more then a simple souvenir and continues to inspire me.
